120 of Australia's best scientific and mathematical minds at Monash

14 January 2008

Australia's best honours and postgraduate mathematics students are converging on Monash University for the next four weeks.

Monash is this year hosting the annual Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) and the International Centre of Excellence for Education in Mathematics (ICE-EM) summer school. 120 of Australia's best maths minds will spend the next month at Monash University's Clayton campus.

More than 120 students have enrolled in a summer school, organised by the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) and the International Centre of Excellence for Education in Mathematics (ICE-EM).

Eight separate courses are being offered to give students extra credit points towards their degrees.

Some of the courses on offer include 'Knots and Links', 'Advanced Methods for Ordinary Differential Equations', 'Approximation Theory', 'The Art and Science of Modelling' and 'Analysing and Solving Decision-Making Problems'.

Among the subject presenters will be international educators including John Stillwell (University of San Francisco) and Jerry Kazdan (University of Pennsylvania).

Dean of Science, Professor Rob Norris said Monash was pleased to host the summer school.

"It is a wonderful opportunity to showcase Monash academics and resources to some of the finest science and maths researchers and educators of the future," Professor Norris said.

"The summer school will also be of enormous benefit for students who can share ideas, collaborate and spend time with their peers."

The International Centre of Excellence for Education in Mathematics (ICE-EM) was established in 2004 with a grant from the Australian Government to the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI).

AMSI is a consortium comprising the mathematics departments of 26 Australian universities, CSIRO Mathematical and Information Sciences, the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Australian Mathematics Trust.

The mathematics summer school is being hosted by the School of Mathematical Sciences at Monash University's Clayton campus from 14 January to 8 February.

More information is available at the ICE-EM website.
