Values focus of major international education conference

24 April 2006

Values and how they are taught in Australian schools will be the focus of a major international conference being held by Monash University on April 27 and 28.

Dr Inna Semetsky, postdoctoral research fellow in Monash University's Faculty of Education, is coordinator of the conference "Moral Education and Australian Values".

"The conference will provide an outstanding opportunity to evaluate and explore the way values are taught within our schools," Dr Semetsky said.

"The importance of investigating the theoretical foundations for values education was stressed at the 2005 and 2006 National Values Education Forums, sponsored by the Australian Government as part of its $29.7 million commitment to a national values program.

"Our conference will not only explore and strengthen the conceptual basis for practising values education in Australian schools, but will also address alternative options to traditional teaching methods."
