2 March 2006

Professor Rod McClure brings a breadth of experience to the accident research director role.

Monash University has announced the appointment of an eminent academic and researcher to head its world-renowned Accident Research Centre.

Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC), which has a long history of being at the cutting edge of accident and injury prevention research, is due to be headed by Professor Rod McClure, a leading expert in the field.

Monash University Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and MUARC Board of Management Chairperson, Professor Edwina Cornish said the appointment would further consolidate the centre's position as a world leader.

"Monash University has been fortunate to secure the appointment of an outstanding academic leader as its director," Professor Cornish said.

"The Centre has established an enviable reputation on a national and international level for its research, and Professor McClure, as its new director, will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to this crucial role."

Professor McClure is currently Professor of Community Care and Epidemiology at Griffith University and chief executive officer and research director of Injury Prevention and Control (Australia) Ltd.

Among his many previous roles, Professor McClure was the Foundation Director of the Queensland Trauma Registry and Deputy Director of the Centre of National Research on Disability and Rehabilitation Medicine.

"Professor McClure has played a considerable public role in the development of injury control in Australia, sitting on key state and national committees," Professor Cornish said.

"MUARC has developed numerous partnerships at government and community level, and is recognised throughout the world for its leading research in the areas of accident and injury prevention research, and this appointment will consolidate this."

Professor Cornish said that Professor McClure's appointment would carry on the tradition of excellence established by the Centre's previous directors.

Professor McClure will formally take up his position as the new director of MUARC in July.
