Monash University academic Professor Rob Hyndman says it is a "great honour" to be awarded the prestigious and internationally renowned Moran Medal for 2007.
The Australian Academy of Science awards the medal, usually every two years, for outstanding research in statistical science by an Australian under the age of 40.
"The Moran medal is one of the top awards for Australian statisticians, so I am delighted to have my work recognized in this way," he said.
Professor Hyndman's best-known work is in the area of statistical forecasting.
"I develop statistical models that are used in forecasting various types of data including electricity demand, cancer mortality, fertility, population, business sales, and so on," he said.
"The nice thing about mathematics is that my research can be applied in many different application areas."
Professor Hyndman will be presented with the Moran Medal by the Australian Academy of Science at a ceremony in Canberra on 3 May next year.
The academy's citation says that Professor Hyndman has won the 2007 Moran Medal for "substantial contributions to several areas of statistics".
"The breadth of his research is remarkable for someone of his age. His theoretical and methodological work covers applied probability, time series, statistical inference, forecasting, non-parametric estimation and statistical graphs," it says.
"He has recently proposed a new method for forecasting age-specific mortality curves, which has already had a major impact with all official Australian cancer forecasts now using this method."
Among his many titles and roles, Professor Hyndman is Director of the Monash Business and Economic Forecasting Unit -- the largest forecasting research group in the world.
He is also Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Forecasting -- the leading forecasting journal in the world, and a co-author of Forecasting: methods and applications -- the best-selling textbook on business forecasting.
