Monash rewards top VCE students

11 December 2006

Victoria's best students will be presented with scholarships to study at Monash University following the release of the VCE results today.

The presentation ceremony will be held at Federation Square to recognise academic excellence and provide students from disadvantaged backgrounds with a chance to study at Monash, recently ranked as one of the top 40 universities in the world.*

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Richard Larkins will greet the students and their families on the red carpet and Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Phillip Steele will present them with their scholarship certificates. This will be followed by a short presentation from a current scholarship student at Monash.

Professor Richard Larkins said, "Monash University is committed toacademic excellence and we feel it is very important to reward the highest achieving students in Victoria. By helping to support these students we can ensure that they are given every chance to study their chosen subjects irrespective of their financial background."

Monash University will offer a range of scholarships in 2007. In addition to those scholarships which recognise academic excellence there is a large number of equity based scholarships. Equity based scholarships are provided to assist students from disadvantaged backgrounds, including those suffering financial hardship, students from rural areas and indigenous students.

Monash will offer over 500 new scholarships in a program totalling more than $7 million in 2007.

"All of the hard work has paid off for these students and they should feel very proud of this achievement," said Pro Vice-Chancellor (Campus Co-ordination) Professor Phillip Steele.

Students may apply for equity based scholarships by visiting the Monash University Scholarships website.

The event starts today at 12.30pm, Lower House, Federation Square, Flinders St. Students will be available for interview from 2.00pm
