Monash University has appointed Professor Pascaline Winand as professor and the inaugural director of the newly established 'Monash European and EU Centre' at the university's Clayton campus. She will take up her four-year appointment on 20 December.
Professor Winand, currently Professor of Contemporary History at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, is highly regarded in Europe and the US for her expertise on the European Union's external relations, and the history of European integration and transatlantic relations.
Professor Winand has a PhD in Political Science from Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, an M.A. in Diplomatic History from Purdue University, Indiana, US, and an M.A. in International Relations from Yale University, Connecticut, US.
In a distinguished international career, she has held posts at academic institutions in Europe and the US including the Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, the University of Pittsburgh, Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv, Ukraine, Tomsk State University, Russia, and Pontifical Catholic University of Peru.
She is also the author of the prize-winning book Eisenhower, Kennedy and the United States of Europe (1993).
Professor Winand's current research projects concern transnational elites, the EU as international actor on the world scene, and EU-US-NATO relations.
Monash Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) Professor Stephanie Fahey said the university welcomed the appointment.
"Monash University is very happy to be bringing to Australia such a prominent European international relations specialist," Professor Fahey said.
"With her wide professional expertise, Professor Winand can be expected to guide the Monash European and EU Centre to a position of leadership in Australia and to contribute to public debates on international matters, not only as regards to Europe but also the USA and Asia."
The Monash European and EU Centre was launched in Melbourne on 31 July 2006. The centre, co-funded by the European Union and Monash University, is one of 22 to be created around the world by the European Commission since 1998.
A key initiative of the centre is the introduction of a Masters of European Integration degree in 2007.
