The sculptor commissioned to design a memorial to people executed at the Tower of London is coming to Melbourne next week to appear as the keynote speaker at a major sculpture symposium hosted by Monash University.
Professor Brian Catling, the Head of Sculpture and Graduate Studies at Oxford University's Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, is an acclaimed sculptor, poet and performance artist.
His glass and stone sculpture 'Tower of London Maquette' symbolically marks the site within the Tower of London where people were executed from the 16th to the 20th century. It features a glass pillow above two discs inscribed with the names of those who died and a poem by the artist.
Professor Catling, who has authored poems, essays and books, has an extensive exhibition record throughout Europe, and several other works on public display in Dublin and London.
He will be based at Monash University's Faculty of Art and Design at Caulfield in the weeks leading up to and following the symposium as a visiting Artist in Residence within the Fine Arts Department.
"Teaching is an essential element of my imaginative spectrum. Being a reflector to others' potential and talent is a privilege and a challenge and it helps keep me sane," he said.
The one-day Sculpture Symposium, on Saturday September 30, will feature international and Australian sculptors and educators discussing the purpose, means and results of teaching and making sculpture in relation to contemporary art practice and the expansive industry it has generated.
