Name: Deepak Prakash
Course: Pharmacy
Year level: 4th year
Mode: Full-time

What is it about your course and the University that helped you to choose Monash?

The Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Parkville campus is renowned as one of the best pharmacy schools in the southern hemisphere. It has a history of more than 125 years of excellence in pharmacy education.

What is your favourite subject and why?

My favourite subject is definitely clinical pharmacy. This subject ties in with many other subjects including pharmacology, pharmaceutics and pharmacy practice producing a good summary on disease states and treatments.

What challenges are ahead for you this year?

Just last week I helped to organise a forum for young pharmacists called New Generation Pharmacy. With my mentor, and the Victorian College of Pharmacy Foundation, we produced a successful evening of stimulating discussion on ideas and issues put forward by fourth-year pharmacy students, interns, and recent graduates. Pharmacy decision makers from many organisations were present to listen to these ideas in an effort to help give young pharmacists a voice for their future.

Our team will now follow-up on the ideas and issues raised at the forum - we will have close contact with many pharmacy organisations to put many of these fantastic ideas into action.

What is your ideal career?

Working as a community pharmacist/researcher to promote primary and preventative healthcare in both rural and suburban areas.

What is it about your course that holds your interest or is particularly satisfying?

I have always wanted to study pharmacy due to the connection between people and chemistry.

Getting involved in various programs to promote a positive social change such as the vice-chancellor's Ancora Imparo Leadership Program has really inspired me to make a difference. The difference that I am trying to make is a more preventative approach in healthcare for all Australians, which I believe is very achievable through the utilisation of accessible cognitive pharmacy services.

What is your favourite place in the world and why?

I would love to go back to Europe. I went earlier this year and particularly enjoyed Barcelona. It had it all including nightlife, culture, food, architecture and football.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

During a student ambassador function, our Dean Professor William Charman told us to "Be a participant, not a spectator". This has pushed me to actively get involved in many organisations and create avenues for future improvements in pharmacy.

What is something about yourself that most of your fellow students wouldn't know?

Even though I was born in Australia, I completed high school overseas. This provided me with a good insight into cultural diversity.
