Name: Tammie King
Course: PhD

What is it about your course and the University that helped you to choose Monash?

Monash is affiliated with the Animal Welfare Science Centre which is involved in the type of research I wanted to pursue. Furthermore I found out that Dr Pauleen Bennett was conducting research on human-animal interactions, specifically on companion animals, within the Anthrozoology Research Group. I was very keen to be a part of the team and conduct my own research on dog behaviour. Pauleen is now my supervisor.

What is your favourite subject and why?

I am passionate about dog behaviour and I am in the process of developing a canine behaviour assessment that aims to measure amicability of companion dogs. An objective, reliable and valid behavioural assessment has the potential to be of great benefit to councils, dog welfare shelter organisations, breed clubs, dog breeders as well as pet dog owners in Australia. In conjunction with developing ways to accurately measure dog behaviour, I believe we need to be educating the public more about dog behaviour and training to help increase dog welfare as well as keep the community safe.

What challenges are ahead for you this year?

I will be embarking on data collection in the next few months. This will involve recruiting a large number of dogs and their owners to participate in the behaviour assessment I have developed. Anyone who has a dog aged at least 18 months who would like to be a part of this exciting research please contact me at tammie.king@med.monash.edu.au

What will be your ideal career (and what will it involve) when you graduate?

My ideal career will involve working with dogs in some way and educating the public more about dog behaviour and training.

What is it about your course that holds your interest or is particularly satisfying?

I enjoy conducting research that has the potenital to be applied in a wide variety of areas and will benefit organisations, the general public and our canine companions.

What is your favourite destination and why?

After I completed my undergraduate degree I spent seven years travelling the world and had a great time exploring many places. My favourite destination would have to be Tobacco Cayes, Belize. What a magical little place. I am also very keen to visit the Maldives.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

Trust your gut instinct.

What is something about yourself that most of your fellow students wouldn’t know?

I was the athletics champion every year at my high school and my best event was discus.
