Name: Lucy Hotchin
Course: Bachelor of Performing Arts
Year level: 3rd year
Mode: Full-time

What is it about your course and the University that helped you to choose Monash?

It was a university that many of my friends were attending and it offered one of the only Performing Arts courses with both a theoretical and practical side.

What is your favourite subject and why?

My favourite subject would have to be scriptwriting. The nature of the course allows sessional teachers to come in and so we are privy to some fantastic educators and professional writers, directors and theatre-makers.

What challenges are ahead for you this year?

My current challenge for this year is actually performing in and putting on Mourning Becomes Electra with the Monash University Student Theatre. I have found this to be the most rewarding extra-curricular activity to do while at Monash.

It is being performed in September and has so far proved to be one of the most challenging and rewarding productions I've ever been involved with.

What will be your ideal career (and what will it involve) when you graduate?

Currently I'm interested in undertaking postgraduate study at Monash looking at the relationship between performing arts and mental illness both as a tool to increase awareness and also its treatment in the past.

What is it about your course that holds your interest or is particularly satisfying?

The course has allowed me to work with industry professionals, seasoned educators, and enthusiastic postgrad tutors. During my time at Monash I have learnt so much about my craft through both the course and student theatre. No other university offers such a diverse range of extra curricular activities that fit in well with your course and provide such amazing experiences.

What is your favourite place in the world and why?

I would most like to visit America - New York City in particular as it is the music theatre centre of the world. The new and innovative off-Broadway shows coming out of New York are both inspiring and exiting and I would love to immerse myself in this culture.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

One of my performing arts teachers told me "to try to explore something new that you haven't explored with each investigation you undertake." This has pushed me outside my comfort zone and provided me with some of the most rewarding work I've ever done.

What is something about yourself that most of your fellow students wouldn't know?

Most students wouldn't know that I suffer from a bipolar disorder and am learning to overcome and work with this everyday. This has always been treated with the utmost respect and care at Monash and I'm extremely thankful for that.
