Monash Games raises money for Salvos29 July 2009
Staff and students participating in this year's Monash Games have raised almost $4000 in conjunction with Westpac Bank for the Salvation Army. The Monash Games have been held for the past three years to give staff and students from the University's Victorian campuses the opportunity to play modified sports in a fun and friendly environment. Each year the event supports a different charity. This year the Salvation Army was chosen because of its work supporting bushfire victims from the Gippsland region. In accepting the donation, Warren Elliot from the Salvation Army thanked everyone involved in the games for their generosity. This year's event featured more than 40 teams and included a faculty against faculty competition for staff. Teams from Clayton campus took away the honours winning the cricket, netball and volleyball, while the Flint Michigan Tropics team from the Gippsland campus won the basketball and VN Blue from Caulfield won the soccer. Philanthropic Relations Manager Madeleine Whiting was so happy with her team's efforts she is considering entering them in a social sport competition at Caulfield campus. "The Monash Games were a lot of fun and were a great way to brighten up the day," Ms Whiting said. "Our team - Team All Sorts - played as it they'd been playing together for ages."
