Shaunnagh O’Loughlin: With those words from one of the Monash Passport themes, seven Monash students did make a difference to the lives of disadvantaged people in South Africa.
They were part of the inaugural Oxfam/Monash internship program which saw them complete 4 weeks working directly in Oxfam’s human rights and HIV/AIDS program. And during an informal welcome home lunch they recounted the impact the trip had on their lives.

Jessica Malin: "The contact that I was able to have with my clients, they told me incredibly personal stories and really opened up to me and being able to listen to what they’ve been through, the hope they still have to improve their lives, they were really in need of help and being able to do whatever we could do was really good."

Laura Dortmans: "I saw a really positive and wholistic model of community engagement that really encouraged me I guess to see things on that small scale."

Shaunnagh O’Loughlin: The program is the first formal agreement between an Australian university and Oxfam and reinforces Monash’s strong and ongoing commitment to social justice as well as enhancing student experience.

Adam Shoemaker: "In just four to five weeks, you can see people who start off not knowing a country or and organisation or a really important health challenge changing to almost experts in that field who have empathy and understanding of cross cultural awareness that they never dreamed of before so that’s really exciting to see it happen so quickly and effectively.
"It is likely we will have another short term internship in South Africa of about 7 weeks duration and we may also look at a semester-long program that may even be for academic credit,"
