Artist resurrects primeval forests3 September 2008
Monash art and design lecturer Susan Purdy's haunting exhibition The Lost Forest breathes life into the ancient forests that once clothed Gippsland. The massive 22 metre-long work, on display at the Latrobe Regional Gallery, traces the dominance and demise of these vast forests. Ms Purdy works in photograms -- a method of capturing the shadows of objects. Acting Head of the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design Rodney Forbes said Ms Purdy's layered technique created a complex and emotionally charged representation of what might have been. "This exhibition allows us to ponder the vastness and richness of these ancient forests, and to know the preciousness of the remaining traces that are left," Mr Forbes said. "It is at once a lament and a celebration." The exhibition runs until Sunday 21 September at the Latrobe Regional Gallery, 128 Commercial Road, Morwell, open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm The project was supported by research grants from Regional Art Victoria and Arts Victoria. |
