On Thursday 31 July, 2008 the Australian Synchrotron will celebrate its one-year anniversary. Monash University welcomed a new era in scientific research with the official opening of the Australian Synchrotron by Victorian Premier John Brumby on Tuesday 31 July, 2007. The Australian Synchrotron is a machine the size of a football field that accelerates electrons to almost the speed of light allowing scientists to examine the structure of matter at an atomic scale. Monash is one of 11 investors in the synchrotron and has established the Monash Centre for Synchrotron Science to enable the University's researchers to take advantage of its location adjacent to the Clayton campus.
