Science Student wins $3,000 for completing Monash Experience questionnaire

12 December 2007

Pro Vice-Chancellor (Quality) Professor Graham Webb, Mr Sean Holmesby and Centre for Higher Education Director Ms Robyn Harris.

Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Computer Science student Sean Holmesby has won $3,000 simply for being one of 15,000 Monash students to complete the Monash Experience Questionnaire (MEQ) in August.

The questionnaire measures the experience of both current undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students at all campuses, including South Africa and Sunway, and Monash College.

MEQ was developed initially in response to a recommendation of the 2002 institutional self-review 'Still Learning' which recognised that Monash needed a systematic mechanism for determining, monitoring, benchmarking and improving the student experience.

Data from the surveys has demonstrated a systematic improvement in the student experience, according to students over the past six years. Currently the data is being analysed for MEQ07 and reports are expected very early in 2008.

In presenting the prize to Mr Holmesby, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Quality) Professor Graham Webb said it was important that students fill in surveys like MEQ and unit evaluations as this lets the University know what areas need to be worked on and filling out surveys was not a waste of time because the University acts on the information.

"The improvement in the experience of current students is due in part to students in the past taking the time to complete these surveys," Professor Webb said.
