Even sports people get the Blues
21 November 2007

| Vice-President (Administration) Peter Marshall presents an award to Club Person of the Year and 2007 AUG Team MONASH captain, Philippa Ulbrick. |
St Kilda AFL footballer and Monash graduate Nathan Burke was inducted into the Hall of Fame at an annual awards night which celebrated one of the most successful years in Monash's sporting history.
A huge number of Blues awards were handed out to sports people across Monash clubs at 44th Monash University Sports Awards, held at the Lincoln of Toorak on November 8.
Burke (DipTeach(Primary) 1991) played for St Kilda from 1987 to 2003, served as assistant coach in 2004-05 and is St Kilda Football Director, AFL Life Member and Match Review Panel member.
Monash Sport Director Martin Doulton said 2007 had been a big year in the University's sporting history, with highlights including top performances at the Australian University Games and strong participation in TeamMONASH™ events.
"The quality of our student athletes representing the University under the TeamMONASH™ banner at the 2007 Australian University Games was not only reflected by the teams success of regaining the No 1 position across Victorian universities for sport but by the largest number of sporting blues ever awarded at Monash in a single year," Mr Doulton said.
"In addition the recognition on the night of the significant contribution to the student and staff experience by the University's Sporting Clubs and through the TeamMONASH™ community fitness events program provides Monash with a distinctive edge when compared to the level of support provided by other GO8 Universities to sport and physical activity."
Australian University Sport CEO Don Knapp announced Monash University would be the Principle Partner University for the 2008 Australian University Games to be held in Melbourne.
The Games is the largest annual, multi sport event in Australia with over 6500 participants across 28 sports expected to congregate in Melbourne between September 28 and October 3, 2008.
Vice-Chancellor Richard Larkins said Monash is likely to have a team of over 500 student athletes competing at the 2008 AUG.
