Monash receives more than $10 million in excellence rewards

10 October 2007

Monash University has achieved outstanding success in this year's Federal Government funding allocations for educational excellence.
Monash has received the highest national funding allocation of all Australian universities in recognition of our commitment to high quality learning and teaching.

Monash University was recognised for its commitment to excellence in teaching and learning in receiving the highest national funding of more than $10.5 million from the Federal Government.

Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP announced the funding last week as part of an $83 million allocation to 23 universities across the country.

"I congratulate the successful universities that have demonstrated a commitment to high quality learning and teaching, and particularly those which have performed strongly across multiple discipline groups," Ms Bishop said.

Monash received funding in the following discipline groups: Science, Computing, Engineering, Architecture and Agriculture ($3.1 million); Business, Law and Economics ($2.7 million); Humanities, Arts and Education ($2.4 million); and Health ($1.2 million).

The fund, announced on 13 May 2003 as part of the Federal Government's Our Universities: Backing Australia's Future package of reforms and initiatives, has provided more than $220 million since 2006 to universities that best demonstrate excellence in undergraduate learning and teaching.

In 2007, the government has committed $7.9 billion to universities, including the $6 billion Higher Education Endowment Fund.
