| Professor Alan Trounson appointed president of multi-billion dollar research institute. |
Vice-Chancellor Richard Larkins has congratulated Professor Alan Trounson on his appointment to one of the world's most influential stem cell research centres.
Professor Trounson was recently named as the new President of the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine, which annually administers $3 billion in research funds.
"On behalf of Monash University, its staff and students I want to congratulate Professor Trounson on his appointment and wish him well for the future," Professor Larkins said.
"Monash University has not lost a researcher, but gained an international ally and created a new connection with Californian researchers who are at the fore-front of stem cell research in the world."
Professor Trounson, together with Professor Carl Wood, was responsible for the first Australian IVF birth in 1980 and has since dedicated many years to stem cell research.
In 2000 he gained world wide attention when he announced his team had discovered that nerve stem cells could be derived from embryonic stem cells – which triggered strong interest in the potential in stem cells to help cure many diseases.
He is Professor of Stem Cell Sciences and Director, Monash Immunology and Stem Cell Laboratories (MISL) at Monash University.
The Deputy Director of MISL, Richard Boyd said Monash University would be a beneficiary of Professor Trounson's move to the United States later this year.
"Alan Trounson is taking the Monash University name to the rest of the world's stem cell scientists, opening new opportunities to link our scientists and students to the world, and will also challenge us to continue working to the same high standards here in Australia," Professor Boyd said.
"The potential of this research to help create a better world is immense. Scientists and students at Monash University will continue to strive for the innovation and excellence inspired by people like Alan Trounson."
