Alumnus braves the elements in Osaka

12 September 2007

Tim Williams, a Biomedical Science graduate, was one of the star performers at the recent IAAF World Championships in Osaka, Japan

Biomedical Science graduate Tim Williams was one of the star performers in Australia's sixth placing in the 4 x 100m relay team at the IAAF World Championships in Osaka, Japan.

The quartet of Williams, Matt Shirvington, Adam Miller and Aaron Rouge-Serret always had its work cut out, running from lane two in a fast heat loaded with Jamaica, USA, Japan, Nigeria and Germany.

That was the order they finished in and all bar Australia qualified: Jamaica's 38.02 bridging to Australia's sixth-place 38.73, a time that was ninth overall and bettered the earlier heat runs of Italy (38.81), South Africa (39.05), Russia (39.08) and Canada (39.43).

Williams completed the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Hons in Immunology) in 2005.

Williams first made an impression on the national scene with medals in the 1999 and 2000 national under-20 championships, eventually earning him selection for the 2000 World Juniors where he exceeded the expectations of many by making the semis of both sprints.

National senior medals have been sparse but Williams has continued to do well enough domestically to make national teams, and when given such opportunities has done well - most noticeably contributing to Australia's third place in the 4 x 100m relay at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games - earning a bronze medal.
