Research Month public forum a great success

29 August 2007

Jon Faine, Thomas Kossman, Samantha Cockfield, Ian Johnston, Melinda Jacobsen, Graeme Johnstone and Arie Freiberg were part of the recent 'Your life in whose hands?' public forum -- one of the highlights of Research Month.

More than 170 people filled the BMW Edge Theatre in Federation Square on Thursday 23 August to participate in the public forum, 'Your life in whose hands?'

ABC 774 radio presenter, Jon Faine, led an expert panel through two unscripted scenarios. Issues covered included: speeding, high-powered cars, teen drivers, motorcycles, road fatalities and injury.

Amid a wide-ranging discussion, panel members made it clear that individuals, legislators and companies had a vital role in taking responsibility for injury prevention.

Panel members included:

  • Professor Arie Freiberg, Dean of Law, Monash University
  • Professor Ian Johnston, Monash University Accident Research Centre
  • Samantha Cockfield, Manager of Road Safety, TAC
  • Melinda Jacobsen, General Manager, Amy Gillett Foundation
  • Graeme Johnstone, Victorian State Coroner
  • Professor Thomas Kossmann, director Department of Trauma Surgery Alfred Hospital, and National Trauma Research Institute

The forum was held as one of the highlight events in Monash University's inaugural Research Month, which begun on August 20 and runs until September 21.

The forum is one event among several that marks twenty years of outstanding research achievement by Monash University Accident Research Centre.
