Monash University came up tops in the recent Monash vs Melbourne Open Day Challenge.
In preparation for the Australian University Games, students from Monash and Melbourne universities took part in a variety of sporting contests on their respective open days.
The challenge was undertaken in a friendly spirit, but the competition was strong. The rivalry was intense, and each team would not stand for defeat on their own turf, especially with their university on display.
With bodies on the line, the first clash was hosted by Monash on 5 August at its open day.
The standard of games was impressive, as each university showcased talented competitors.
Monash open day saw some electrifying basketball and volleyball. The women's basketball team and men's volleyball were victorious on the day. It was the triumphant mixed touch-football team that ultimately saved Monash, giving them a 3-2 lead after the first bout of competition.
Melbourne University hosted the second part of the challenge at its open day on 19 August.
Monash displayed their sporting versatility, performing well on their trip away from home, taking part in badminton and netball.
The women's badminton team came through with the goods, as well as the mixed netball side. It was this competition that highlighted the strength of the competition, going into overtime, in what was a very close game.
Monash won the challenge 5-4, and will hold the trophy until the next open day challenge in 2008.
