In true collegiate style humour, at the 1961 opening of Monash University, students from Melbourne University presented our then Vice-Chancellor Dr Louis Matheson with a very unusual gift ... a wooden spoon!
While there are no known photos of the presentation, Monpix has contributed this photo taken by Richard Crompton in 1975 at the official farewell of Vice-Chancellor Dr Matheson.
The spoon itself is now in the Archives and has a tag attached with a note written by Dr Matheson: 'presented to Monash on our opening day, March 1961, by a delegation of Melbourne University students'.
This week's contribution with thanks to Monash Archives.
