Infection and immunity talk enlightens staff, students and industry18 July 2007
More than 160 people listened to a diverse range of speakers at the Monash Infection and Immunity Network Symposium on 28 June. Researchers and students from Monash faculties of Medicine, Nursing & Health Science, Engineering, Science and Victorian College of Pharmacy attended along with The Burnet Institute and CSIRO and industry representatives from Pfizer, CSL and major sponsor Dow AgroSciences. Professor Steve Wesselingh gave a talk on 'Molecular Farming: Preventing disease with transgenic plants'. Professor Paul Hertzog, Director of the Centre for Functional Genomics and Human Disease at Monash Institute of Medical Research, said the symposium was an opportunity to get young scientists involved in research from relevant Monash faculties. Professor Wesselingh, Director of the Burnet Institute and Member of the Monash Infection & Immunity Network Executive Committee, also presented PhD students with prizes for two poster presentations and an oral presentation. Poster prize winners were Brett Verstak, MIMR, prize provided by Biocomm2; and Kate Jones, Burnet Institute, prize provided by the MIMR. The oral presentation prize went to Lev Kats, Monash Dept of Microbiology, who received a prize provided by the ARC Centre of Excellence in Structural and Functional Microbial Genomics.
