Top finish for Monash students in Latrobe City Challenge

The final day of the 2007 Latrobe City Challenge university games saw some thrilling contests play out across Gippsland as athletes lined up to fight for the title in their chosen sports, bringing the games to an end in exciting fashion.

Monash University proved a standout during the games, dominating in various sports including the finals of the men's and women's Aussie rules, mixed netball, lawn bowls and soccer.
Finals' highlights included the playoff of the men's Aussie Rules final between Monash and Deakin with last years champions Monash securing consecutive titles, defeating Deakin by one goal. The women's final also saw hot favourites Monash go down to Deakin in a nail-biter, narrowly losing by one point.

In other sports' news, the Uni Blues have become the first team in 2007 to sweep a round of the Australian Volleyball League Women's Series, recording four straight victories in round two at Morphetville, South Australia's Marion Leisure Centre, at the weekend.
Following a fourth placing last year, the fledgling club, an amalgamation of Monash and Melbourne University Women's teams, has become a dominant force in 2007 competition.
In the team's final fixture against Western Australia, the Blues won the first set 25-10, lost the second set 27-25 and recovered to win the final two sets 25-17 and 25-22 to emerge victorious.
The Blues now sit top of the AVL table, two points clear of New South Wales adversaries UTS/Sydney University in second place. Women's series action recommences on 27July, as the Uni Blues play host to round three competition at the State Volleyball Centre, Dandenong.
