27 June 2007

David Nankervis and Brendan de Souza from Monash Sport meet Winter Olympic gold medalist Steven Bradbury at Mt Buller.

Monash Sport staff had the honor and privilege of dining with Winter Olympic athletes during a recent visit to Mt Buller.

Marketing coordinator Brendan de Souza and Caulfield campus team leader David Nankervis shared an evening meal with Australia’s finest athletes at Mt Buller Chalet Hotel while staying at the Monash University Alpine lodge.

The dinner was hosted by Steven Bradbury, the first Australian to win a Winter Olympic gold medal, and was held to celebrate the most successful international season in Australian winter sport history, plus providing an opportunity to raise money for the athletes.

Athletes present on the night included speed skater Mark McNee, aerial skier Liz Gardner, parallel giant slalom snowboarder Johanna Shaw, figure skater Jo Carter, luge rider Hannah Campbell-Pegg, mogul skiing Nick Fisher, top halfpipe snowboarder Andrew Burton, and alpine skiers Craig Branch and Jono Brauer.

Olympians discussed their careers, key experiences in their chosen sport and what it takes to be an elite athlete. They discussed various setbacks through sporting injuries, their peaks and lows and how it affected them, individual motivation to compete and how sport is a part of their life.
