Indonesian Consul-General, Mr Budiarman Bahar has visited Monash for the first time since his appointment earlier this year.
Vice-Chancellor Richard Larkins and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) Stephanie Fahey hosted Mr Bahar for his visit to Monash Clayton campus.
Discussions focused on the continued collaboration between Monash and Indonesian universities in both higher research and education, as well as the development of new initiatives which will see Monash and its Indonesian partners continue to progress in new and developing areas of international education and research.
Monash currently has 14 agreements in place with Indonesian universities. While these agreements span all faculties, engineering, medicine, nursing and the health sciences are areas of particular collaboration between Monash and Indonesian institutions such as Universitas Indonesia and Universitas Sumatera Utara.
The latest initiative links Indonesia's national narcotics body, the Indonesian National Institute on Drug Abuse (INIDA), with the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, AUSAID and the Australian Federal Police.
This agreement will see the Faculty involved in five areas of research collaboration with INIDA, with research aimed at reducing the demand for drugs in Indonesia, rather than simply focusing on reducing the supply of drugs to the streets.
