Softball success Former Monash student and VIS softball scholarship holder Kate Quigley has starred in the winning Australian team during a three-game series against China in Brisbane. Kate and the Australian team then flew to Sydney to compete in a four team series against China, New South Wales and the Australian U19 team. Swim stars Top swimmers Brenton Rickard and Patrick Murphy flew the Monash colours with impressive performances in the FINA World Championships in Melbourne and Duel in the Pool event in Sydney. Rickard picked up a gold medal in the 4x100m medley and silver in the 200m breaststroke at the world titles. Murphy was second in the 4x100m freestyle relay and fifth in the 200m freestyle at the Sydney event. Rickard has also been named in the Australian squad to compete in the Mare Nostrum series in Europe in June, which include events in France, Spain and Monaco. Taekwondo talent Former Monash student Caroline Marton won a gold medal in taekwondo at the Dutch Open in the Netherlands on 24-25 March. Alpine passion for Petanque Mt Buller is hosting the inaugural Mt Buller Petanque Open on 5-6 May and everyone is invited to come and check out the action. Petanque, also known as boules or bocce, consists of players throwing metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden target. Competition entry costs $10. Teams looking to enter the competition must register and, where possible, pay by 30 April by calling Mt Buller Resort Management on 5777 6077. Competitors can also book accommodation at the Monash University Alpine Lodge at discounted rates. Details on the lodge can be found by visiting the Monash Sport website. |
