Elite water polo players were happy with the conditions at Clayton’s Doug Ellis Pool

Canada's best women's water polo players have trained for the FINA World Championships at Monash University's Clayton campus.

Members of the Canadian Women's Water Polo Team showed their skills during training for the championships at the Doug Ellis Pool.

The 14 players hoped to improve on a bronze medal at the 2005 championships in Montreal.

Water polo is an extremely fierce, competitive and tiring game played over four, eight-minute periods.

Each team is made up of 13 players and due to the intense nature of the game, regular substitutions are common. Seven players from each team are in the pool at any one time.

The competition has seen the 16 top men's and women's teams battling it out for the title. A round robin competition will take place in four divisions, each with four teams, with the two highest placed teams moving through the medal games.

The competition also serves as the qualifying tournament for the 2008 Olympics.
