Embracing intellectual freedom without trepidation is how Adib Khan consistently succeeds in his career as an author.
His first novel, Seasonal Adjustments, received short-listing for the 1994 Age Book of the Year award. It also won the 1994 NSW Premier's Literary Award for Book of the Year and the 1995 Commonwealth Writer's prize for Best Book.
His second novel, Solitude of Illusions, was short-listed for the 1997 Christina Stead Prize for Fiction and 1997 Ethnic Affairs Commission Award. It also won the 1997 Tilly Aston Braille Book of the Year Award.
Now, Mr Khan will join Monash University's school of English, Communication and Performance Studies (ECPS), as he undertakes a PhD examining post-colonial writing within the Indian sub-continent.
"I am looking forward to working with ECPS, they are fantastic in terms of resources and people, it is a very fertile territory to research from." Mr Khan said.
Director of the Centre for Postcolonial Writing, Dr Chandani Lokuge, is looking forward to the department's latest addition. "This is certainly a huge boost for our Creative Writing programme and for the Centre for Postcolonial Writing, and also for Monash's profile in terms of creativity and research." Dr Lokuge said.
Mr Khan is no stranger to Monash University; the author completed a Masters of English at the Clayton campus in 1975.
In addition to broadening his research, Mr Khan sees his latest move as one that will bring great personal reward.
"When you research an idea, you have to ask yourself to whose advantage is it and what propels an issue. I'm looking forward to the experience and developing the ability to ask the right questions of myself and others."
