13 December 2006

Professor Roger Nation has won the Australasian Pharmaceutical Sciences Association Medal 2006.

Breaking new research ground in emerging medications and their effect on patients has proved a winner for 2006 Australasian Pharmaceutical Sciences Association Medal recipient Professor Roger Nation.

Professor Nation is Head of the Department of Pharmacy Practice, Victorian College of Pharmacy at Monash University.

His research interests include pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, particularly in relation to anti-infective drugs, optimisation of use of anti-infective drugs, medication and patient safety and more recently the development of new areas of professional pharmacy practice.

He is highly respected nationally and internationally as both an educator and a meticulous and productive researcher.

"I am delighted and also very grateful for the great honour that has been bestowed upon me by APSA," Professor Nation said.

"I have been very fortunate to have worked with some outstanding people -- academic staff, research staff and PhD students -- over a long period of time. I owe a debt of gratitude to the people with whom I have worked collaboratively and, most of all, to my wife and children for their love, encouragement and support."

APSA president Ross McKinnon said Professor Nation has mentored many current APSA members and been a major support of the organisation for many years.

To date, his efforts have yielded 166 peer-reviewed publications, including 25 book chapters and 175 conference papers.

Professor Nation received the medal at the closing session of the APSA Annual Meeting held in Adelaide on 5 December.
