Multimedia students swapped business cards with industry professionals at a high profile showcase in Melbourne last week.

The exhibition by students from Monash University's Berwick School of Information Technology was held at the BMW Edge, Federation Square.

Members of the public encountered 3D animation, computer games and educational CD ROMs -- the work of about 50 final year Multimedia Systems students.

Exhibition co-ordinator and multimedia lecturer Mr Matthew Butler said the event served a number of purposes.

"It gives the graduating students an opportunity to exhibit their work in public, it gives us an opportunity to get people from the industry to look at that work, and it fosters ties with us and helps the students with that first step in getting into the industry," he said.

"Many of the students take the initiative in their final year, producing work on the cutting edge of multimedia and pushing the boundaries of the discipline."

Mr Butler said a recognisable theme among students' work this year was 3D animation, both for entertainment and for education.

"We had students doing short 3D animated films, but also people doing pieces for education in areas like palaeontology. I think everyone in attendance was impressed with the work."

The exhibition was open to the public from 9am to 5pm on Tuesday 21 November, with a special viewing for invited guests from the multimedia industry in the evening.
