Von Humbolt Fellowship to Monash academic

29 November 2006

Dr Dimitris Vardoulakis will travel to Germany next year as part of an Alexander von Humbolt Fellowship

Dr Dimitris Vardoulakis -- who teaches philosophy and literature in Monash University's School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics -- has been awarded an Alexander von Humbolt Fellowship.

The fellowships are offered world-wide on a competitive basis. The most important criteria for selection are the applicant's publications and the quality and feasibility of his or her research proposal.

As part of the fellowship, Dr Vardoulakis will travel to Germany next year and conduct research on the concept of stasis.

"Stasis in Greek means to be static or not to move; it also means revolution as well as disease," he said.

"I will be looking at particular authors such as Aristotle, Spinoza, Heidegger and Walter Benjamin."

Dr Vardoulakis has a strong publishing record and has been editor of the post-graduate journal Colloquy.

"Colloquy has been an important part of the publishing community at Monash ... which I hope to have continue," he said.

Dr Vardoulakis' recently completed PhD has as its topic the "Doppelgaenger".

"It explores issues such as self-reflection, and how it has a political significance."
