Cup Day BBQ brings families together

8 November 2006

More than 150 people from Monash and the local community attended the Melbourne Cup Day BBQ at the Clayton campus.

Local families and those from distant lands have come together for a Melbourne Cup Day Barbeque at Clayton.

Student and Community Services Head of Family and Childcare Services, Ms Jennifer Weber said there was a great response from the community, with more than 150 people attending.

"It was a chance for a range of families to get together. There were international students and their families, Monash staff and their families and families from the local community," Ms Weber said.

"It was a great way for Monash to make connections within the community and build cross cultural friendships. Also, Melbourne Cup Day is a Melbourne tradition and a great way for international student families to see how we celebrate it."

Student and Community Services invited those who attended to continue building on the links formed on the day, by becoming involved in its Student Friendship Program.

The pilot program aims to link international students with volunteers to provide students with support, friendship, information on community resources and advice on how to get involved in the local community.
