I Want to Dance Better at Parties at Monash6 September 2006
Men and their experiences with dance provide the inspiration for dance company Chunky Move's acclaimed work I Want to Dance Better at Parties, to be performed at Monash University. The Alexander Theatre at Monash's Clayton campus will host an evening performance on 22 September at 8 pm. I Want to Dance Better at Parties has been created by Chunky Move Artistic Director and Choreographer Mr Gideon Obarzanek. Interviewing men from a range of cultures and backgrounds, Mr Obarzanek set out to discover their relationship to dance. Those interviewed included a dance music composer who avoided dancing at all costs, a recently widowed father of two who took private dancing lessons, a young clubber, and a retired telecommunications engineer with an obsession for collecting and coding folk dances. I Want to Dance Better at Parties features excerpts of the interviews on film on five life-sized screens, interwoven with dance, lighting and music.
"The work begins as a factual and informative demonstration about these men and the place dancing has in their lives and gradually evolves into something much more subjective and expressive," Mr Obarzanek said. "It is finally a highly impressionistic dance work, composed of a series of imagined private dances representative of the subject's inner lives." Monash University Arts Centres Director Ms Jan Clancy said the production, which is the last to feature in the 2006 Monash Performing Arts Program, is highly enjoyable and engaging. "This is a quality production with highly original and unforgettable dance performances," Ms Clancy said.
