University Campus Watch program launched

5 July 2006

The university Campus Watch program was launched this week at four of Monash's six Victorian campuses.

The program aims to encourage and promote greater awareness of campus security issues among university students, staff, visitors and key stakeholders by involving them in designing, recommending, promoting and assisting in the implementation of suitable preventive strategies to support a safe university environment.

Monash is only the second Victorian university to employ such a program. The program is based on the Victoria Police Neighbourhood Watch program.

Monash Crime Prevention Officer and program organiser Ms Anh Luong said she hoped to promote proactive rather than reactive responses to crime.

"We hope to give students, staff, visitors and key stakeholders to university campuses some involvement in matters relating to their security and to involve key stakeholders in matters relating to relevant campus security."

A Campus Watch Committee, to be coordinated by Ms Luong, will be established at each of the six campuses.

Each committee will consist of committee members as well as zone representatives comprising students, staff and other key stakeholders.

For further information, or to find out more about becoming involved, contact Ms Anh Luong on +61 3 9902 0087 or email anh.luong@adm.monash.edu.au.
