International ARC success
3 May 2006
Monash has received the bulk of Australian Research Council funding presented to Victorian universities to support international research collaborations.
The university has secured four out of seven Victorian ARC Linkage International Grants, worth a combined $95,500. Three of the Monash grants will fund projects in the Faculty of Engineering.
Professor Kerry Hourigan of the Department of Mechanical Engineering will lead a project that will use fluid mechanics to gain a greater understanding of vascular diseases.
The project, which will receive $40,000 over two years, involves collaboration between researchers in Denmark, France and Switzerland, through the Monash University Biomedical Engineering Technology Alliance.
Dr Rimma Lapovok in the Department of Materials Engineering will head a research team to work on development of advanced processing technology for magnesium-based alloys in the building and transportation industries. The project, which involves collaboration with Germany and the US, will receive $28,000 over two years.
Professor Xiao-Ling Zhao of the Department of Civil Engineering will lead a Monash team that will collaborate with researchers in China to investigate carbon fibre reinforcements for steel. The project will receive funding of $11,000 over two years.
In the Faculty of Science, a team led by Professor Alan Bond of the School of Chemistry will collaborate with researchers to investigate design, structure and behaviour of a new class of solid state materials. They will receive $16,500 over two years.
