Students and alumni shine at the games

5 April 2006

Monash students and alumni brought home three gold, three silver and four bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games last month.

Monash arts student Jacinta Hamilton was part of the women’s basketball team that won gold at the Commonwealth Games.

In the final week of the games, arts student Jacinta Hamilton was part of the Australian women's basketball team that defeated New Zealand by 38 points to win the gold medal match.

Lauren Hewitt, who completed a Bachelor of Science in 2005, won a gold medal for her part in her team's performance in the 4x100m relay, after surviving a difficult baton change to the last runner.

Computing graduate Travis Brooks was part of the men's hockey team that also won gold, and Janine Ilitch (BE (Civ) (Cl) 1997) received a silver medal after the women's netball team was narrowly defeated by New Zealand.

Irena Olevsky (BBus (BBU-Gipps) 1997) won silver in the synchronised swimming duet and bronze in the synchronised swimming solo.

Earlier in the games, science student Brenton Rickard won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals for his efforts in the pool.

Mr Rickard swam the breaststroke leg in the gold-medal-winning men's 4x100m medley relay. He also won silver in the men's 200m breaststroke and bronze in the 50m and 100m breaststroke.

Rosie Hooper, a recent arts/law graduate, finished eighth in the women's javelin, and Dave Zalcberg, who is undertaking a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery, finished sixth in the men's table tennis.

The current students are part of the university's Elite Athlete Support Program, established by Monash Sport in 2003 to help students balance their academic programs with elite sporting activities.
