Students and alumni display their sporting prowess

Monash science student Brenton Rickard has won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games.

He is one of three Monash students in the games. Also representing Australia are medicine student Dave Zalcberg (table tennis) and arts student Jacinta Hamilton (basketball).
The students are part of the university's Elite Athlete Support Program, which was established by Monash Sport in 2003 to help students balance their academic programs with elite sporting activities.
Mr Rickard swam the breaststroke leg in the gold-medal-winning Men's 4x100m medley relay. He also won silver in the Men's 200m breaststroke and bronze in the 50m and 100m breaststroke.
Four Monash alumni are also competing in the games -- Travis Brooks (BComp 2005) in men's hockey, Janine Ilitch (BE(Civ)(Cl)1997) in netball, and Lauren Hewitt (BSc 2005) and Rosie Hooper (BA 2005, LLB(Hons) 2005) in athletics.
Ms Hooper has completed her competition, finishing 8th in the women's javelin. Ms Hewitt will compete in the 4x100m relay on 25 March .
