Professor Larkins said the university fully supported participation in sports and other recreational pursuits by Monash staff, students, alumni and their families and friends.
"Even moderate involvement in sport and physical activities can have immensely important benefits for the physical and mental health of the community," he told an audience at the Clayton campus on Monday 20 March.
Professor Larkins noted that involvement in fun and fitness activities at Monash had grown through initiatives such as WHAM (Wellbeing Happens At Monash) and the 10,000 Steps virtual walking race as well as the Monash community sports program.
"It is very pleasing that the number of participants in Monash community sports events has grown from 185 in 2004 to more than 600 last year," he said.
"I congratulate everyone at Monash who organises our fitness program and those who take part, and I encourage everyone in our community to get involved and build on the success we experienced in 2005."
Key activities for 2006 are the Mothers Day Classic fun run/walk on Sunday 14 May, the Melbourne Marathon on Sunday 8 October, Around the Bay in a Day bike ride on Sunday 15 October, and the Singapore Marathon on Sunday 3 December.
