Researchers scoop women's health awards pool

26 October 2005

Monash PhD researcher Dr Sonia Davison and research fellow Dr Woraluk Somboonporn have been recognised for their research into women's health at this year's Menopause Society Awards.

Dr Davison, who is currently completing her PhD within Monash's Women's Health program, received the Australasian Menopause Society Annual Scientific Award for her paper, 'Androgen levels in adult females: changes with age, menopause and oophorectomy', published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism this year.

Dr Davison said she was delighted and honoured to have received the award.

"I was very fortunate to work on such a great project," she said. "I have been especially fortunate to be able to work with Professor Susan Davis and Associate Professor Robin Bell, who have both given me a huge amount of support, advice and encouragement over the past four years."

Dr Somboonporn, who undertook a visiting fellowship within the NHMRC Centre of Clinical Research Excellence, also worked under the supervision of Professor Davis and Associate Professor Bell.

She received the Barbara Gross Award for the best free communication at the annual congress for her paper titled 'The risks and benefits of testosterone for postmenopausal women: a systematic review'.

Dr Somboonporn has since returned to Khon Kaen University, Thailand, where she works as an obstetrician gynaecologist and assistant professor.
