Pro vice-chancellor Professor Merilyn Liddell presented Dr Teoh with a cheque, certificate and commemorative plaque at a ceremony on 4 October.

Dr Teoh said he was surprised and honoured to have been the first recipient of the award.

"This award is truly special to me for three reasons," he said.

"Firstly, it is a professional achievement, as the award is the highest accolade given to any staff member at Monash University Malaysia. Secondly, it fulfils my aspiration of being an excellent educator and, thirdly, I am proud to have been selected as the winner by a panel of distinguished judges and all heads of school.

"As an academic, I strive to be an educator who empowers the students to learn about themselves and about others."

Dr Lan Boon Leong, a senior lecturer from the School of Engineering, was presented with the Highly Commended and Runner-Up Award.

Professor Liddell also presented two special commendation awards -- to School of Business director of student affairs Ms Shanty Rachagan, and econometrics and statistics lecturer Dr Soo Siew Choo.
