Danish link gains educational focus

26 October 2005

In recent times, Denmark's connection with Australia has been focused on Princess Mary, but an agreement between Monash and Copenhagen University means Danes can now learn more about the homeland and heritage of their princess and future king.

Mr Karel Reus from the Monash Office for International Development witnesses the signing of the agreement in Copenhagen by Copenhagen University rektor Professor Linda Nielsen. Other witnesses are (from left) Mr John Edelsgaard Andersen, Mr Stuart Ward and Ms Anne Bruun.

The agreement, signed earlier this year, will see the two universities cooperate in the teaching of Australian studies.

Dr Andrew Hassam from the National Centre for Australian Studies at Monash said it would enable Monash to send an academic or researcher to offer the unit ‘Contemporary Australia' each year to Danish students.

Students who successfully complete the unit will have the option of spending time at Monash to continue studies on Australia in the context of the Master in Australian Studies degree.

The agreement extends long-standing cooperation in student exchanges between the two universities and opens up further possibilities for developing research and teaching links.
