Monash leads the way on crime prevention

14 September 2005

Monash has appointed a crime prevention officer to raise awareness of safety and security issues among staff and students across the university's six Australian campuses.

Ms Anh Luong (pictured) took on the role two weeks ago as part of the university's commitment to promoting a strong security culture and awareness. She is part of the university security advisory office and will work with campus security sections, police and local community crime prevention practitioners to promote initiatives across all Victorian campuses.

She will also regularly address staff and students to help build a greater awareness of safety and security issues.

"This is about being proactive," Ms Luong said.

"Monash has a large student and staff base and we want to make sure people feel safe while going about their daily routines and have the necessary skills to deal with safety or security issues if they arise."

Ms Luong joined Monash from the Australian Federal Police.

She said her Vietnamese background would ensure she was better able to help the university's high number of international students, particularly those from Asian backgrounds.

As crime prevention officer, Ms Luong will also help departments address potential security issues in their own areas and will provide guidance on security related safety within the workplace.
