Donor provides medical scholarships for Monash University Malaysia

18 May 2005

An anonymous donor has provided funding for two Malaysian students to undertake the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at Monash University Malaysia from February 2006.

The scholarships, valued at more than $AU226,000 (RM650,000), will cover the tuition fees for the five-year undergraduate medical program at Monash University Malaysia, including the first-year of study at Monash in Australia.

They are available only to Malaysian students aged over 18 who have a monthly household income not exceeding $1700 (RM5000).

Monash University Malaysia's pro vice-chancellor, Professor Merilyn Liddell, said the scholarships would provide support for high-calibre students who would not otherwise have had the opportunity to study medicine.

She said the university was grateful for the scholarship provision, as equity of access for students was important to the university.

Monash Malaysia took in its first batch of 50 medical students early this year. For the 2006 intake, students will spend the first year of study at Monash's Clayton campus and the remaining four years in Malaysia.

From 2007 onwards, the entire program will be run at the Malaysia campus, where the first two years of study will be spent at the main campus in Bandar Sunway before students continue their clinical study at the Hospital Sultanah Aminah in Johor Bharu.
