Medal for top researcher

Professor Alan Bond from the School of Chemistry has been awarded the prestigious Craig Medal by the Australian Academy of Science for his outstanding work in chemical research.

The Craig Medal is an annual award that recognises high-level contributions by active researchers. Professor Bond will receive his award at the academy's annual general meeting in Canberra in May.

Professor Bond, who has just returned from nine months as visiting professor at the University of Oxford, came to Monash in 1995 as chair of chemistry. This year, the university appointed him the R L Martin Distinguished Professor of Chemistry.

He is a world leader in building state-of-the art instrumentation that can be used in environmental, industrial and research settings. The instrumentation underpins a number of current research projects funded by the Australian Research Council.

He is also involved in collaborative projects with many Australian and overseas universities. One of these is a joint venture to commercially develop Monash-patented sensors for detecting chemical compounds in blood.

Professor Bond said that being recognised by the academy was a great honour.

"This medal is named after a most distinguished chemical researcher – David Craig – and I am greatly honoured to receive it," Professor Bond said.

Last year, Professor Bond was appointed a professorial fellow for five years by the Australian Research Council. He will return briefly later in the year to Oxford as the Vallee Visiting Professor.

As part of his award, Professor Bond will present several public lectures in cities across Australia.
