Human Factors: Barriers and opportunities workshop

Published: 21 October 2009

Human factors is another buzzword often used in discussions related to safety and quality in health care. The science of human factors helps us to implement strategies that achieve patient safety. It enables us to understand, for example, how to: not blame the person on the frontline, encourage people to speak clearly with one another, introduce and use new technology and develop teams and clinical leadership.

Human factors is much more than just plain common sense or teaching people how to use computers or wash their hands.

Increasingly health professionals understand that human factors is a true scientific discipline that integrates expertise from such diverse fields as psychology, anthropology and ergonomics. The science of human factors has been applied for many decades to improve safety and effectiveness in other high-risk industries, which are also complex and dependent on people.
