Teaching Non-English Speaking Background Students - Melbourne

This workshop outlines some of the language and cultural factors affecting clinical teaching and learning in multicultural groups, and introduces practical strategies for teaching students from non-English speaking language backgrounds. Principles and approaches learned in this workshop can be applied more widely to a range of teaching contexts.

The workshop focuses on:

  • The relationship between communication style, culture and language
  • The ways in which discourse rules, based in culture, impact on communication
  • Cultural, language and teaching methodology factors that may inhibit international students and influence clinical learning and performance
  • Principles and methodology for a safe and effective learning environment
  • Instructional strategies and teacher language to facilitate increased student participation
  • The integration of communication skills teaching into clinical content
