Topic: Making a mess of academic work

Presenter: Professor Miriam Zukas, University of Leeds, UK

This seminar will be videoconferenced to room A3.21, Peninsula campus and room 2S120, Gippsland campus.

Drawing upon empirical studies and conceptualisations from her research with Janice Malcolm and from recent literature, Professor Zukas will consider how the fabrications of managerialism, such as the workload allocation form, fragment the experience of academic work and attempt to reclassify purposes and conceptualisations of academic work. Professor Zukas will explore the gap between official and unofficial stories, attempting to reframe the relationship between discipline and its various manifestations in academic practice, and suggest a research agenda for investigating academic work.

Professor Zukas is Professor of Adult Education and Director of the Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Leeds. She was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy in England in June 2008.
