Public lecture: Climate Change, Global Forest Loss and Copenhagen - Clayton

The Monash Future Council presents a public lecture by Dr Sophie Bickford (chief scientist, Carbon Planet) on climate change, global forest loss and Copenhagen. The loss of global forest cover constitutes some 17 per cent of the total emissions of greenhouse gases annually, making it the third largest source of greenhouse emissions. Despite producing more emissions than the US or China annually, forests are not included today under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change or its Kyoto Protocol. The inclusion of reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD) in the new international climate change framework, to be determined in Copenhagen in December of this year, has been seen as crucial to delivering the emissions reductions require to give the world a chance to limit global warming to 20C. This presentation discusses what is required for REDD to be successfully implemented.
