Public lecture: Should we use technology to change our genetic destiny? - Melbourne

Published: 8 April 2009

Presented by Professor Julian Savulescu, Oxford Professor, Monash Alumnus.

With over 100 articles published in highly acclaimed journals, Professor Savulescu is actively involved in education and stimulating open discussion of ethical issues arising in everyday life such as cloning, stem cells, genetics and neuroethics.

Professor Savulescu recently received an award from the Wellcome Trust to establish the Oxford Centre for Neuroethics, the first centre of its kind in Europe.

Savulescu will argue that we have good reason to use genetic technologies, not merely to address disease, but to actively enhance future generations of humans.

Drawing upon social and economic arguments, and also upon conceptions of human freedom, he argues that we may have a moral obligation to adopt his recommendations to shape the human species.
